Contracting at Microsoft - Perhaps your old group should have
asked more questions before you left and they want you to back part time?
Unfortunately those opportunistic lawsuits have made it difficult for everyone.
Basically there are only three options:
- Work through a Microsoft approved agency
- and have that agency skim a
(large?) percentage of your hourly billing rate off the top
- Be an independent contractor
- which is much more desirable, but
unfortunately has been made very complicated
- Hire back on part-time
- dev groups don't seem to like these arrangements but other groups like
tech writing seem more facilitating
Microsoft has a short list of approved contracting agencies which they work
with (i.e.
volt,
ArtSource
). The agencies are categorized
as to types of temps (technical, artistic, clerical, etc.) they place.
The agencies take a percentage of the hourly rate Microsoft pays for your
services.
Due to legal hassles with contractors in the near past, Microsoft now
has very strict criteria for would be independent contactors:
- Must not have been a full-time Microsoft employee during the
previous six months - this of course is a deal-breaker for the recently
departed.
- Must have at least 5 clients besides Microsoft - Wonder what the
technical definition of client is, and over what period of time is this
measured?
